I see some debate on the appropriate use of the term “Catholic.” My view leans liberal on this. For example: although they have different slants, it’s fine for National Catholic Reporter and National Catholic Register to use that term. But I draw the line at “Catholic Vote.”

I think the canonical rule for calling organizations "Catholic" is useful in many respects, but it has been poorly (and unevenly) followed, applied, and understood. And there's no civil regulation to back it up.

There has to be a better way to publicly certify that an organization is officially recognized by the Church as Catholic. Maybe there is.

Now we have a weird mix of orgs that were ordered to take "Catholic" out of their name who complied (Church Militant), those who didn't comply (NCR, Catholic Worker newspaper), those who should (CatholicVote), and countless others that use the word but likely don't know the rule.

Do you know which Bishop told Catholic Worker to remove “Catholic” from their name? Just wondering because the others I had known about, but not the Catholic Worker newspaper.

I have heard that Cardinal Spellman told Dorothy Day to remove Catholic from the Catholic Worker newspaper. @ColleenDulle or @RobertEllsberg can you confirm?

He did. She responded with a respectful letter pointing out the scandal this would create and how it would encourage anti-Catholic prejudice. The subject was dropped. See “All the Way to Heaven: Selected Letters of Dorothy Day.”

I also dug up a quote from Michael Harrington on the official website. It suggests the cardinal was "angling for" it - is it possible he never took the full step of making a formal request? catholicworker.org/memories-…

I wouldn’t focus on the semantics. The directive was personally conveyed by Mons. Edward Gaffney at the Chancery. Apparently after Dorothy’s response, the matter was dropped. See pp 245ff.
