It was a question she answered with her life. Because of Dorothy Day no one would have to ask that question again.

Sadly, there is no answer that would be sufficient. Despite our successes, and achievements, this is a wound that can afflict us for many years to come! We still must do the hard work of healing our neighbors and ourselves.

A great question, may be one answer: because churches (and their members) are mostly part of the system which we call natural competition. It is not natural but suppressive. Jesus reminded his people to be at the lower end.
