My friend Jim Forest died today at 80. We met 50 years ago when I was 16. I grew up to become the editor of his more than a dozen books, including classic biographies of his mentors, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Daniel Berrigan.

But I owe him so much more. It was he who led me to Dorothy Day and pointed me toward my vocation. He accompanied me through all the best and hardest times of my life—in the latter times, sometimes with several letters a day.

As Henry Walpole witnessed the execution of Jesuit Edmund Campion, some of the martyr’s blood splashed on his coat. Deeply moved, he went abroad to become a Jesuit, then returned to England where he too died as a martyr.

A dedicated peacemaker has died. Jim Wilson was one of the five pacifists who burned their draft cards in Union Square on Nov 6 1965 to protest the Vietnam War. He is the one on the right, with the great A.J. Muste standing by. Dorothy Day also spoke in support of this action.
