In the 88th anniv. issue of the CW, I have written about the principles or basic “ingredients” that have accounted for its longevity and ongoing relevance: 1) seeing Christ in the poor; 2) resisting the forces and values that cause poverty; 3) proclaiming an alternative society.
May 1, the 88th anniversary of The Catholic Worker, which Dorothy Day and her companions first distributed in a communist rally in Union Square in 1933. The original price of 1 cent has proved inflation-proof.
May 1--the 85th anniversary of the Catholic Worker. From the first issue: "For those who are sitting on park benches in the warm spring sunlight. For those who are huddling in shelters trying to escape the rain...

Dear friends: Five years ago today my Jesuit brother Daniel Berrigan, SJ, died. I didn't know Dan well, but he was a great help to me in one particular moment of my Jesuit life (along with Avery Dulles), encouraging me to live it "for the long haul." americamagazine.org/faith/20…
Captivated by my grandfather @DanielEllsberg’s insights at @UMassAmherst’s #EllsbergConference. “We’ve learned from Afghanistan what the American people will put up with in the way of bombing other people…that’s a sad lesson for me, and we have to come to terms with it somehow.”
Daniel Berrigan, Jesuit priest, poet, prophet, died 5 yrs ago, 4/30 2016. He was one of those great saints who come along to show a new way of being a follower of Jesus—in his case, as a link in the chain of blessed Peacemakers who acted as if the Sermon on the Mt. were true.
His famous words on behalf of the Catonsville 9: “Our apologies, good friends, for the fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children, the angering of the orderlies in the front parlor of the charnel house. We could not, so help us God, do otherwise.”
2/2 is "contrary to fact." (That's the phrase I recall from English class.) Since the fact suggested is not, we believe, contrary to fact, an ordinary verb (mode?) may be used. Just thinking out loud.
But he showed that there is more to being a peacemaker than just opposing war. In his ministry to the dying (cancer and AIDS), in his eye for beauty, his capacity for friendship, he resisted the power of death and affirmed life in every way.

He showed the spiritual practices and virtues needed to sustain such a life: balance, modesty, a detachment from results, a sense of humor, a capacity to mourn, rejoice, go give vent when necessary to holy anger, and above all to build community. Last of all, he was my friend.

50 yrs ago at the the May Day protests in DC (the largest acts of civil disobedience in US history), 3 unlikely radicals go undetected: my father @DanielEllsberg (one month before publication of the #PentagonPapers), Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky.
They were not among the 12K arrested, but they were maced. "Wow, that's good Mace!" my father exclaimed, "As if I were a connoisseur. What I meant was that this was a product that really worked as advertised." Afterward they dispersed, my father to a lecture by McGeorge Bundy at
the Council of Foreign Relations in NYC. "It was a surreal experience, after a morning of mobile tactics on 14th St. to be sitting in a room surrounded by my fellow war criminals, listening to LBJ's assist. for national security tell lies about the war."
Just got @RobertEllsberg’s book book!
I can’t wait to read it. It looks like a book which we all need to read right now.....
He is the fabulous publisher of my edited book #KeepingHopeAlive@OrbisBooks
Join us for morning prayer this Saturday at 9amET! We’ll be talking about Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement with @RobertEllsberg & DL Mayfield!
St Catherine of Siena (1380), Doctor of the Church, who challenged popes and monarchs to make peace, defend justice, and heal the wounds in the church. “Preach the Truth as if you had a million voices. It is silence that kills the world.”
