The master and his wife had written their own wedding vows, which came with various codicils, disclaimers, and failsafe provisions. One of these would be triggered if either party were ever to be publicly labeled a “loser.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump

The master knew no finer sport than capturing a man’s soul. The most prized trophies often began as bitter foes. But a time would come when he truly owned them. And then he entered their names in his book and assigned them their first ordeal. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

In returning to a refugee camp in Lesbos, Pope Francis again takes up one of the signature themes of his papacy—mercy and solidarity with migrants and refugees. I collected his writings on this theme @OrbisBooks The introduction reprinted in @NCRonline: bit.ly/3pxqyKI.

"Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.’”
Merry Christmas! 🎄 ps. Santa, please bring ammo. 🎁

The 1st issue of the Catholic Worker was distributed at a rally in Union Square on May 1 1933, but perhaps the true origin of the CW was on Dec 8 1932, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when Dorothy Day offered a prayer with “tears and anguish” to find her vocation.

While covering a communist-led Hunger March of the Unemployed she asked herself why Catholics were not leading such a march. She brought her question to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and prayed for a way to connect her faith to her passion for justice and the oppressed.

She longed to “to make a synthesis reconciling body and soul, this world and the next.” Returning to New York she found a Frenchman, Peter Maurin, waiting for her. He began to indoctrinate her with his program for a movement to promote the radical social message of the gospels.

Indoctrinate?

Obviously not meant in a negative sense.

Beautiful! The two CW houses in New York City are named after St. Joseph and Mary.

It took some time for her to realize that Maurin was the answer to her prayer. The CW was launched 5 months later. But there is more to this story. Dorothy’s conversion, 5 yrs earlier, was prompted by her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter, Tamar.

Her decision to have Tamar baptized and to herself become a Catholic caused her separation from her “common-law” husband Forster, who refused to get married. It was a choice, she wrote, between God and man. But in editing her letters I discovered the story was more complicated.

For 5 years she wrote Forster passionate love letters, begging him to give up his “pig-headedness" and agree to marry her. The last letter was on Dec 10 1932, two days after her prayer in the Shrine. She was giving up on her hopes for happy married life. She was letting him go.

In that prayer it was as if one door closed while another was opening on the rest of her life. There is so much to contemplate in this mystery. But it is striking to consider that everything she achieved in her life occurred because of the frustration of her heart’s desire.

On Dec 8 this week a special Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to celebrate the conclusion of the work of the Historical Commission (on which I have served) preparing Dorothy’s cause for canonization, which now goes to Rome.

In some ways this occasion is a further outcome of that prayer of Dorothy 89 years ago. For me personally, an extension of the date 46 years ago when I first walked in the door of the CW, expecting to stay a few weeks, and embarked on a journey that continues to the present day.
