“One thing we know, which the White Man may one day discover—our God is the same God. You may think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land; but you cannot.”—Seattle, Chief of the Suquamish, d. June 7 1866

“Sometimes it is only in retrospect, when you’ve gone through a really hard time, but you see the fruit that has continued to be born in your life and in other people’s lives that makes you say, ‘YES, God’s grace was working here even when I didn’t feel it in the moment.’ ”

André Trocme, pastor of the Protestant village of Le Chambon in France, died 50 years ago on June 5 1971. The story of how his village rescued Jews from the Nazis is a moral oasis in a dark era of capitulation to lies, fear, hatred, and violence.
June 5 1971: Death of André Trocme, pastor of the Protestant village of Le Chambon in France. He and his wife Magda organized their village to offer a safe haven for Jews and others fleeing persecution during Nazi occupation. Hundreds took part in this conspiracy of goodness.
