For too long, I’ve been hesitant to write publicly about Israel-Palestine. Those days are done.
Here, I make the case that U.S. Catholics need to start seeing the dire situation in the Holy Land as ‘our’ issue, too. commonwealmagazine.org/why-s…
"Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes... What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? ... For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still."
Isaiah 10
Now he will know some of the known unknowns. And probably a few unknown unknowns. And he will wish that he could send a messenger back to warn future war criminals, but he will be told, “They already have the law and the prophets. Let them listen to them.”

Bryan Massingale is one of the great teachers and prophets of our time. See his @OrbisBooks title--still incredibly urgent. Looking forward to the next one!
I was very moved by my conversation with Irish theologian Donal Dorr about his new @OrbisBooks title, "A Creed for Today: Faith and Commitment for Our New Earth Awareness." Very inspiring. Watch here: piped.video/F7RSi67vKkw via @YouTube
Former NCR editor Tom Roberts writes:
Largely disregarded in the wider community, the only recourse left to the bishops was to publicly humiliate one of their own, the most observant Catholic president in the country's history. ncr.media/3drqzLg

50 years ago on June 28 1971 my father surrendered for arraignment in Boston for copying the Pentagon Papers. A reporter asked him how he felt about facing jail. He said: “Wouldn’t you go to jail if it would help end this war?” Here with my stepmother Patricia. @DanielEllsberg
Robert! We are in Mexico with family. Saw your tweet about your father's historical and courageous decision! So glad to know you since the days you had your apt.on 4th street...! Thanks for continuing the radical peace witness of your father and Dorothy, and Ireneus!
I love this clip of Mike Gravel recounting reading the Pentagon Papers into the Senate record, because of what it teaches about courage. He was not excited, not confident; he was “frightened to death”, scared of going to prison; he was overcome with emotion. And *that* is bravery
The decision of right-wing Catholic bishops to begin drafting a statement many of them said was aimed at President Biden was also an attack on Pope Francis, who had made clear that he did not want them to go down this divisive road.

Italian priest Lorenzo Milano was tried for insulting the Fatherland by defending conscientious objectors. The world is divided between oppressed and oppressors, he said. “The former are my Fatherland.” He died if leukemia on 6/261967 while his acquittal was under appeal.
“Perhaps Jesus is always as close as that. His loving mercy is only a touch, a gesture, a prayer away. But it is only by faith—sometimes a faith born of desperation—that we dare to reach out and touch him.” A father’s prayer. My homily on today’s gospel. @ClearFaithPub
Pope Francis to @JamesMartinSJ “Thinking about your pastoral work, I see that you are continuously looking to imitate this style of God. You are a priest for all men and women, just as God is the Father for all men and women.”
By the transitive principle, all those bishops and priests who have scorned and defamed @JamesMartinSJ are not “priests for all men and women” and are not imitating the style of God.
