Thank you to the 250+ Catholic theologians, church leaders, scholars, and writers who endorsed "A Home for All: A Catholic Call for LGBTQ Non-Discrimination," including:
My relationship with #HenriNouwen began over 40 yrs ago when I rejected one of his his essays for the Catholic Worker. Now the stone rejected by the builder has become the cornerstone. See my new @OrbisBooks publisher’s letter: orbisbooks.org
I recently spoke at the @ChestertonSoc conference on “Chesterton and My Jewish/Catholic Journey.” When Society prez Dale Ahlquist asked me to speak on being a Jew who converted to Catholicism after reading GKC, I told him I wrestled with Chesterton’s writings on Jews. (1/35)
Citizens United allowed unlimited campaign spending by corps, making it impossible for GOP pols to acknowledge climate change, instead fostering scare stories about Green New Deal socialists coming for yr burgers and lightbulbs. But no reckoning with cost of eco devastation.
Because we would not accept the cost of voluntarily redesigning our economy and lifestyles, we will be forced to pay an unimaginably (and tragically) higher price.
Two saints and martyrs died on August 9: Edith Stein, Jewish convert, philosopher, Carmelite nun, who was gassed at Auschwitz in 1942; Franz Jägerstätter, farmer and layman, beheaded for refusing to serve in Hitler’s army in 1943. Serving the God of Life vs the Idols of Death.
FD of Mary MacKillop (d 1909), first saint of Australia. While her Sisters provided heroic service to the poor, her story is remarkable for the opposition and persecution she endured from the bishops. One excommunicated her. Another spread rumors she was an alcoholic.
@RobertEllsberg reading “blessed among us” . Thank you for telling us about so many amazing faithful courageous “saints” who stood up to a number of power hungry bishops . The institutional church sure is a work in progress right ?
Aug 6, when a jubilant Pres Truman announced we had deployed "the power of the sun" on #Hiroshima, falls--curiously--on the Feast of the Transfiguration, when Jesus appeared to his disciples in a dazzling light, like the sun or flashing lightening. Two irreconcilable paths.
While #JamesCone was dying in 2018 he wrote his memoir: the story of "the making of a black theologian." He could not foresee the #BLM awakening of '20 that prompted an outpouring of interest in his earlier books. Yet his last work has been overlooked. @OrbisBooks@UnionSeminary
