Entertaining but misleading about the motive for the burglary. NIxon admin was not trying to find evidence that he was a spy or to smear him, but to prevent him from leaking what they feared he possessed, additional docs on Nixon’s secret plans for escalation, including nukes.
Ryan, that Sheehan story was nonsense. While true that he copied the papers without my dad's consent, Sheehan himself confirmed in the story that when he finally asked my Dad to give him the papers (tho saying falsely that the Times didn't plan to use them) he did.
Artist Ade Bethune owed her name to a misprint at the Catholic Worker. Her name, A. de Bethune, was accidentally rendered Ade. She decided to keep it. My reflections jn @GiveUsThisDayLP
Many yrs ago my dad appeared on stage with Gordon Liddy. He asked the audience if they were familiar with Vonnegut’s concept of a karass—a group of people collaborating unknowingly in a common plan. He said: “Gordon Liddy and I were part of a karass to end the VN war.”
Without Liddy’s burglary of his psychiatrist’s office (approved by the White House) there would have been no need for payoffs to the Watergate burglars, no Nixon resignation, no end of the war. Karass: “a team that do God’s Will without ever discovering what they are doing.”
Ten years ago on May 1 2013 my mother, Carol Cummings died. I thought of Blake's line, “We are put on earth for a little space, that we may learn to bear the beams of love." Sometimes we achieve that by our own efforts and sometimes by what is stripped away.
Her life was a long process of letting go, so many things lost or taken away. But her life was enlarged by the things she carried with her, and it grew larger still as she let go of regrets, resentments. She lost memories and words, til there was nothing left but her smile.
She took me to church every Sunday and imparted her values of fairness, kindness and decency. When I left college to join the Catholic Worker she was initially apprehensive but then said: "We want our children to be safe and happy, but that is not what we want for ourselves...

"We want to find our own way—to have a life that is meaningful, to take risks, to fall and get back up again and learn everything we can. So you do that. You go with my blessings and find everything you are looking for." That way my mother's gift. I share it with you today.
