Orthodox St and martyr Maria Skobstova died in Ravensbruk camp on 3/31 1945. My reflections in @GiveUsThisDayLP “At the Last Judgment I shall not be asked whether I was successful in my ascetic exercises… I shall be asked, Did I feed the hungry…visit the prisoners?”
Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who was beheaded by the Nazis in 1943 for refusing to take a military oath to Hitler, was beatified in 2007. The faith and courage of his wife Franziska, who died 3/16/2013, also deserves memory. My reflection in @GiveUsThisDayLP
I was given a copy of All Saints. Thx for that!! The words of acclaim about it (preface) by Daniel Berrigan could apply to my book Wisdom From the Margins as well. Please take a look if you would, and see what you think.
During his trip to Canada Pope Francis was challenged by First Nation peoples to renounce the "doctrine of discovery" that justified the oppression of indigenous people. Today this Vatican statement was released: bit.ly/3M3rljF
Pope Francis: “Never again can the Christian community allow itself to be infected by the idea that one culture is superior to others, or that it is legitimate to employ ways of coercing others."
Sr Thea Bowman d March 30, 1990. “What does it mean to be Black and Catholic? It means that I come to my church fully functioning, I bring myself, my Black self, all that I am, all that I have, all that I hope to become.” My reflections in @GiveUsThisDayLP#BlackCatholic
Highly recommend the documentary “The Movement and the Madman,” the story of the massive anti-war Moratorium demonstrations of Oct and Nov 1969 which—unknown to the protesters—had enormous effect in changing history, thwarting Nixon’s secret plan to launch massive escalation…
in Nov 69 up to and including carrying out the nuclear threats he had been making. The scale of the demonstrations convinced him he could not implement these plans. He deliberately conveyed impression that demos had no effect on him, and as the war continued, many believed him.
But it turns out that all who marched and protested surely spared the world the first nuclear attacks since 1945 and saved countless lives. Lesson: we can’t count on knowing in real time or perhaps ever the actual effects of our actions for peace, whether large or small.
Episcopal Bishop @Mebudde of Washington and Bishop-elect Matthe Heyd of NY joined @DeanKBD in Louisville to offer support as she received the Grawemeyer Award in Religion for her book “Resurrection Hope; A Future Where Black Lives Matter.” @OrbisBooks
I want to introduce you to Finn (who's seven!) and whose rendition of “Honey I Do” I found to be particularly awesome. Congrats Finn!!
Thank you for all your submissions. The responses to this idea were so beautiful, talented, and heartfelt. I appreciated them all so much.
Honored and privileged that my colleagues at @ManhattanEdu have awarded me an early promotion to full professor. I’m excited to share in Manhattan’s (and the wider @lasalleorg) mission of education with a focus on those on the margins.
