On BL3, I worked with Julian Peterson to create a custom reverse grain effect wwise plugin that supports RTPC mapping and affects sound sources caught in it. Here's a clip of it during various stages of development. More details in the thread.

In addition to the granular effect, there are also quad wind and debris sweeteners that fold to mono at the vfx origin to simulate the grenade sucking air into it. The debris sweeteners are surface type specific, as we do a check around the player for surfaces.

The basic idea originated after Julian and I discussed theories on how sound behaves with the spacetime geometry of a black hole.

Our takeaway for the idea was that soundwaves are stretched when traveling upstream, the position and time reverses inside the horizon, and they become thinner and more faint as they near the black hole.

The effect was first mocked up in a DAW environment. After more discussions with Julian, he then built the effect using Csound. (Giving me a lesson in it as well!)

The Csound patch let me feed it different source files and tweak settings so I could get an idea of what the effect might sound like in-game, and also provided an idea of parameters that could be exposed.

We decided on grain duration and smoothing filter coefficient. Other effects were already native to wwise, and the reverse grain effect could be stacked with them. We ended up also adding EQ and pitch shifting based on distance to the singularity, and some EQ based on azimuth.

This might sound like a lot for a subtle grenade effect, but this same custom effect and idea went on to be used with portals and other "warpy" things in BL3.

It was so much fun collaborating and working on this, and I certainly learned a ton in the process! Hopefully you enjoyed reading about it.

Working with @PaulStoughton on a library in any way has been a dream of mine since we talked about it back in 2015. I'm thankful for Gearbox supporting and fostering collaborations like this, and the daily inspiration from the Gearbox Audio Team. Go grab a copy! It's phenomenal.
New sound libary Pulse Energy Weapons 2 is out today! I'm also releasing all 28 Soundminer Radium presets used to create the designed weapons (featured in demo), along with 10 signature presets by the uber-talented @TheFeezus at Gearbox. Have a listen at penguingrenade.com

Check it! This is a super useful tip. Also, new Energy Weapons library next week! 👀👀
Releasing a new Energy Weapons library next week. Here's a quick technique I like to use to create source for energy weapon firing transients using Tonsturm Traveler. Trick works for basically any constant source you want to derive transients from. #gameaudio #sounddesign

Don't mind me, I'll just be over here getting weird with a DPA 4061 on a stick. #gameaudio

Suddenly reminded of the audio team lunches held at Soundlab.
Often, foley artists will use broken glass, smoothed from years in the sea to replicate the sound of your co-worker eating lunch.

Super generous, and a great device!
Looking to send my 702 into the hands of someone just getting started in #gameaudio and from an underrepresented group in our industry. Please DM me and tell me about yourself and what you love about game audio! Let’s get you recording!

Rented a jackhammer for some demo work around the house and I just had to run a quick recording session with it.
