This is huge. Self-preferencing defaults is the single most effective anti-competitive trick that Big Tech uses to entrench their market dominance and block alternatives. This month, we sent an open letter to over 700 MEPs about this. Glad to see the EU taking strong action.
The adopted #DMA amendment on default settings is very significant, as users would be free to choose their default settings the first time but also to change them any time, incl. pre-installed apps. Tech companies such as @DuckDuckGo & @ProtonMail have been calling for this.

Huge increase in @ProtonVPN signups in Sudan, where Internet is being limited by the government. We are deeply gratified to see our services being used to overcome oppression and are committed to supporting freedom worldwide. accessnow.org/update-interne…

Today, Google can preinstall apps on Android devices and set as defaults their own services, which millions of people won’t bother changing. This is wrong and anti-competitive. Users should have the choice to select their own defaults while setting up their phones.

The Digital Markets Act is a bold reform that can reinvigorate the tech sector. But if it doesn't ban pre-installation of default apps, it may fail at its job: to level the field and restore healthy competition. And there may not be another chance to get it right. #CompDM

The implosion of NSO is positive news, but bad actors like them (state-sponsored and otherwise) are never in short supply. The next NSO is already out there. All the more reason to make privacy and encryption the default.

Internet freedom is a human right. The people in #Sudan can use ProtonVPN for free to bypass online censorship: protonvpn.com/download?utm_c…
Internet is back in Sudan after a court today threatened to arrest the CEOs of the country’s telco companies, according to a lawyer in the case. Social media service still require a VPN.

More than 45 000 European digital companies support a stronger interoperability obligation in the #DigitalMarketsAct. They call for extended interoperability provisions to all core platforms. And we should listen!
The Digital Markets Act needs to impose stronger rules on pre-installed apps, interoperability, and bundling to make digital markets open and competitive. We're proud to launch the Coalition for Competitive Digital Markets (#C4DM) as a founding member: competitivedigitalmarkets.eu

It's easy to talk about privacy, but few companies are actually willing to put privacy ahead of profits. At Proton, privacy isn't convenient marketing. It's a core value and the reason we created the company.
Replying to @doctorow
Apple has a tactical commitment to your privacy, not a moral one. When it comes down to guarding your privacy or losing access to Chinese markets and manufacturing, your privacy is jettisoned without a second thought. 14/

This week, we welcomed 5th to 7th graders @ProtonMail's Zurich office as part of the Swiss nationwide Future Day #Zukunftstag that helps students discover gender-atypical professions. Building privacy for the future will require both boys and girls.

Since the beginning, @ProtonMail stands for privacy, and it is good to see that privacy was one of the main topics @WebSummit this year. Privacy starts with fair competition, and we will fight for a web that serves everyone, not just Big Tech. #WebSummit2021
