This speculation is false. The tuning, reduction in 6khz resonance, and decreased distortion of the 8XX are achieved via changes to the damping scheme of the housing and changes to the driver. This is not achieved simply by adding tape to it.

Regardless I don't understand how your company can sit there with a straight face and think this tuning is okay. How can you be so out of touch that your justification for this tuning was "HD800S has grating upper mids"? When the upper mids on the 800S are very recessed.

The changes to the driver are added rear damping. Though the pre-production unit didn’t have these changes yet. It was just tape.
