As someone who worked at FB for 8 years, I believe that drastic action is needed to stop FB from accelerating the coming global unrest. Drastic like shutting down link sharing in News Feed and Messenger.

It can be re-enabled on a country-by-country basis as AI is developed to classify uses. Facebook has lost the game of global whack-a-mole; it needs to accept its losses and turn off Feed before we all kill each other.

In other countries, this tactic is used to whip up mobs to go kill ethnic minorities. If you think it won't happen here you are wrong. nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/f…

Less "Facebook shouldn't be in the business of deciding which speech is allowed." More "Facebook should not exist in a recognizable form."

In #PrescottAZ where I live, a FB rumor started that BLM was bussing people in from Phoenix and armed militias showed up to “defend” the downtown area. So many people bought into it. They had prayer circles going to pray for the safety of the town. Of course no one showed up.

What stops its immediate replacement from springing up? You’re right about it radicalizing and dividing people, but our laws permit it and at least in the US the consensus level required to establish a legal fix is long gone.

Both Facebook and the people on it have a well established right to spread their garbage thoughts and lies. I think people are no more likely to accept AI censors than human censors. It feels like we’re past the point where attempting control of the narrative could work.
