add-on thought: "but WHY are there so many bad coaches?" there are a lot of people in the tech ecosystem who go around looking to "heal" others to avoid doing the work internally. but as the saying goes, guides/teachers can only take you as far as they've gone themselves.

Oof. This thread is good. But now I need to go for a walk.
How do toxic leaders get so far? How did they "make it to where they are?" 1/n They effectively silence critics (using their authority, influence, etc.) This can be overt: they make them leave. Or it can be covert: making critics feel "difficult" and "not a team player".

DoorDash workers are going on strike today (July 31st, 2021). They’re demanding tip transparency and a base pay of at least $4.25 per delivery. Don’t cross the picket line.

Y’all gotta stop asking random people you meet “so what COVID hobbies did you pick up?” PEOPLE DIED. People lost family, friends, partners. Quarantine was not a little fun summer camp for everybody. One day, somebody is gonna answer that question in a way you aren’t ready for.

This reminds me, if you are director+ in eng leadership you need to make friends with exec search firms. You want to be in their database.
Does anyone happen to know of any tech executive search firms that are accepting new clients? I've a potential client (and more in the future) that I would like to refer.

As a therapist, I have canceled sessions w/clients because I was too tired or lacked the capacity to be fully present and authentic in session. I was completely honest with them about my need to reschedule, "I will not be able to make our session today because I'm too tired.

This is such a great question. As a manager/leader, I think you've gotta take responsibility for your emotions, and get clear on what you need to do for yourself+your team. Everyone's different! Sometimes you need to compartmentalize, or ask for more time, or push through.

If I could ask @lara_hogan one question… — How do you manage personal morale burps? If you feel crummy how do you block that from bleeding into your coaching and feedback?

Like for me personally, I'm pretty good at healthily compartmentalizing. And sometimes work is what helps me get through really tough personal life times. That's not true for everybody, so it's really important to know yourself well enough to identify what you need to do.

Right now I'm enduring some grief over the loss of my beloved cat, Oatmeal. It's rocked me more than other moments of grief in my life. So I've needed to change my approach a bit to work and rest—but at the same time, giving workshops the past few weeks have REALLY helped.

(And for those of you who have seen me in workshops or coaching calls the last few weeks: I've had this photo sitting next to me on my desk where he would have been during our call! :) It's helped so much)
