Australian legislators are about to introduce (& likely pass) a bill that effectively reverses Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act by making social media companies liable for defamation posted by its users. quillette.com/2021/12/08/tro…

In autobiographies you sometimes read about a kid's life being changed by a gift. This has a better chance of being such a gift than anything else I can think of.
if you're thinking of a gift for someone who wants to learn or level up their programming skills, give them a hacker plan on Replit: replit.com/site/gift-hacker

9 yo asked when and where I'd go back in a time machine. I said ancient Athens. He said he'd go back to Europe before the Black Death to warn them about it.

Okay folks, still lot of uncertainty around severity of disease, but here’s what I’ve gleaned from latest data and many chats that @mroliverbarnes and I have had with the brilliant, tireless doctors & public health officials in South Africa ft.com/content/d315be08-cda0… Thread follows

A few things I’ve come to believe in my <mumble mumble> years in music tech: 1. Music is not “inherently social” - it is just as often anti-social 2. The number of people that care about what you listen to is very small - and very short lived 3. Discovery is not a viable product

Excellent analysis by @IdoIrani about the waning booster effect (for infection) stratified by age group in Israel. The worrying part: the rate of decline is most age groups is similar to the 2nd jab.

If Bernie is going to attack people for greed when rising stock prices make them richer, is he going to praise their generosity when falling stock prices make them poorer? Because the two scenarios are exactly equivalent. Only the sign is different.
This is obscene. Last week, 8 investors in Pfizer and Moderna became $10 billion richer as news about the Omicron variant spread. It's time for these pharmaceutical companies to share their vaccines with the world and start controlling their greed. Enough is enough!

A fascinating analysis of how the lab leak theory of Covid-19's origin was briefly (but very successfully) labelled a "conspiracy theory." I worry we're going to see more of this type of strident incompetence as the mainstream media declines. tabletmag.com/sections/news/…

Pressuring the referees helps your team: The home field advantage is due to the influence of the crowd on referees. When COVID forced soccer matches in closed arenas, it didn't change performance but it eliminated "one-third of a yellow card for away teams relative to home team."

Read in 12 yo's school report that he's losing marks on exams because of his "almost illegible handwriting" and realized that exams are now practically the only remaining place where handwriting is required, and are thus inaccurate measures in that respect.

They should start by at least not making kids learn the weird copperplate script they call "cursive." I learned it in school but don't write in it myself.

Sometimes I reflect on the fact that we never would have built what we built when starting Lattice if we’d already been familiar with the HR industry. I think about this whenever people are skeptical of founders who don’t have industry experience.
