OK this is interesting, not so much that DOJ is giving permission to them to testify, but is waiving all executive privilege including privilege relating to presidential communication for those officials
DOJ letter: Former Trump admin officials can testify about Jan 6 bc it's “an exceptional situation in which the congressional need for information outweighs the Executive Branch’s interest in maintaining confidentiality.” Story w/ @AndrewDesiderio politico.com/news/2021/07/27…

Ok lol yes, the letter is blunter: basically "there are still EB privileges we continue to assert, and that you should decline to discuss (e.g. out-of-scope issues or ongoing prosecutions etc), but not this, which is entirely waived and unassertable". justsecurity.org/wp-content/…

Replying to @pwnallthethings
Can they still claim executive privilege and refuse to testify if the DOJ has waived it?

Might get them contempt of Congress, but I’m not sure.

Well, good. It's about time somebody realized that organizing and inciting a violent insurrection coup is not something that falls within a President's lawful powers or duties. There should be *no* Executive privilege associated with the commission of serious felony crimes.
