Throughout the pandemic, we've gotten used to the idea that most #COVID cases are "mild." The CDC says mild cases account for 80% of symptomatic infections. Some people hear this and think it's not worth worrying about. Are they right? A thread on what "mild" really means. (1)

“Stop crying,” Rick Rescorla told his wife, on 9/11. “I have to get these people out safely. If something should happen to me, I want you to know I’ve never been happier. You made my life.” nyer.cm/Hddnau5

Fellow vaxxed folks: DON'T get complacent or even that confident. Had a family gathering last weekend (15 ppl), everyone but one guest was fully vaccinated. A week later, 6 guests got COVID, 5 fully vaxxed breakthrough cases, 1 admitted to the hospital today. THREAD

MRI data from ⁦@UniofOxford⁩ is quite chilling. A major message I try to convey to young people/parents (and policy makers): the public health impact of COVID19 also goes beyond deaths and hospitalizations, significant long-term neurological effects cnbc.com/2021/08/31/covid-co…

It is truly fascinating how the fact "COVID-19 is much less dangerous for children than adults" got turned into the total myth "COVID-19 is totally safe for children"

It never should have been six feet. It should be shared air in a room.
The delta variant has forced a quick pivot on key pandemic rules, from indoor masking to booster shots. But what about the guideline on what defines a "close contact" with an infected person? sfchronicle.com/health/artic…

This might be the best thread I've ever read on Covid-19 & kids. It speaks thoughtfully, intelligently & honestly to the dismissiveness & overconfidence that has been so damaging to the narrative. Yeah. It's actually a pretty big deal.
I am very, very tired and I can't keep having this conversation so I'm just warning you now that once I post this thread I'm muting it because self-care. COVID in kids is a big deal and it is a serious public health problem.

Outdoor. Eating.
“The outbreak was traced back to an outdoor pre-orientation party for PharmD students on August 2nd.” Outdoors, masked except when eating, at a school with a 94% vaccination rate. Stay safe, everyone. wral.com/coronavirus/duke-un…

👀 NEW: Given what we know about #DeltaVariant and long Covid, it is immoral to send unvaccinated kids, teachers, and staff into classrooms. Here’s a summary of the best data from around the world, and a strong case for vaccination and mask mandates, now theguardian.com/commentisfre…

👇Until our children can advocate for themselves, it's our job to do it for them. Please don't make false assumptions about their health & safety. Covid-19 is too unforgiving for that. #KidLifeCrisis

To all of you citing survival statistics for kids with Covid19, take it from a pediatrician: survival isn’t the only thing that matters to kids or their families.

One of the most annoying things in this pandemic is folks on left & right only using metrics of ‘hospitalizations’ and ‘deaths’, as if that’s all that matters, as if #longcovid doesn’t exist, as if the data showing even ‘mild’ Covid cases can have cognitive effects doesn’t exist!
