So @ProtonMail received a legal request from Europol through Swiss authorities to provide information about Youth for Climate action in Paris, they provided the IP address and information on the type of device used to the police
Now, of course Protonmail has to comply with Swiss law, but is that what you mean by "No personal information is required to create your secure email account. By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. Your privacy comes first."
It was confirmed by @andyyen that in criminal cases, Protonmail can log IP addresses, their documentation say "in extreme criminal cases"
In criminal cases, certain privacy rights can be suspended by the authorities. The legal basis and further information here: protonmail.com/blog/transpar…
IANAL, but I have a hard time seeing how young people squatting buildings in Paris is an extreme criminal case. In any case, I have an issue with this lack of transparency from ProtonMail, if any police service can ask them to log IP addresses, that is not anonymous
Some more information from @andyyen
Some thoughts on the French "climate activist" incident. It's deplorable that legal tools for serious crimes are being used in this way. But by law, @ProtonMail must comply with Swiss criminal investigations. This is obviously not done by default, but only if legally forced.Show this thread

This thread got a lot of attention so let me add this: building privacy preserving services is hard, I definitely think @ProtonMail should be more clear with the risk of being forced to have IP addressed logged but let's not throw the baby with the bath water here.
I appreciate protonmail transparency on what happened, they provide a onion domain to avoid that issue (and a VPN), every service has to follow the law of the country they are in and a biggest issue here is the criminalization of climate activists by the french police
Good explanation by @protonmail and I appreciate that they are going to clarify their obligations in case of criminal prosecution protonmail.com/blog/climate-…
