I still think, in evaluating conspiracy theories, we really underestimate how the pandemic erased people's baseline of normality, and lockdown trapped them inside with social media.

I once got to meet Umberto Eco—who was very memorable. But this film clip of him tracking down a book in his personal library makes him seem all the more impressive.

Great post by Tyler Cowen. Many economists and policy makers have logically inconsistent assumptions about elasticities.

The minimum wage is the perfect example of a policy that's best implemented at a state or metro level. The federal minimum should be a floor of floors.

Are we really having a "public conversation" about raising the federal minimum wage to a level that's equal to the median wage in some states?

If I woke up & found out that: Demand curves for the stuff I supplied were perfectly inelastic, And simultaneously, the supply curves for the stuff I wanted were perfectly elastic, I wouldn't conclude neoclassical economics was wrong. I'd conclude I was living in the Matrix.

Kandinsky was an economist before changing careers at age 30 to become a world renowned painter; his art remained highly influenced by math we use in Econ: e.g. Kakutani developed his famous Fixed Point theorem in 1941. A year later, Kandinsky painted Fixed Points. Beautiful, no?

I suspect all the “expectation management” about the vaccine — downplaying its effectiveness and telling people they can’t change their behavior after they get it — is fueling vaccine hesitancy.
The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are “essentially 100 percent effective against serious disease,” Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said. “It’s ridiculously encouraging.” nytimes.com/2021/01/18/brief…
